Kristine Hymøller graduated from Gerrit Rietveld Academie BFA, (NL) and Sandberg Institute MFA, ( NL). She lived in the Netherlands as a practicing artist until 2013, when she moved to Denmark. Hymøller is frequently exhibited in Denmark and internationally. She recently took part in a residency at ZKU, Center for Art and Urbanistics, Berlin ( BE-2021), and she exhibited Solo at Spark Gallery (SE- 2021), C4 Projects (DK- 2018), Spanien 19C (Dk- 2018) and she had a dual solo exhibition at The round tower copenhagen (DK-2021).

Hymøller is a multidisciplinary artist working with material investigation and performative processes. Based on the utopia of the ideal society, Hymøller’s work focuses on the staging of the Western world to which we are all subjected and which frames our daily lives. Using topics such as architecture, beauty and growth, she explores the role and meaning of gender and identity in the man-made environment and the dynamic between the cultivated facade and chaos. Her work highlights the transformation of society and the individual through the ideals of beauty that characterise our times, how we deal with and respond to decay, and how renewal relates to people’s need to embellish and repair.

Min praksis består hovedsagelig af skulptur, tryk, tegning, performative processer og installation. Med udgangspunkt i utopien om det ideelle samfund centrerer mine værker sig om den vestlige verdens iscenesættelse som alle er underlagt og som danner rammen om vores daglige færden. Med temaer som arkitektur, skønhed og vækst undersøger jeg kønnets og identitetens rolle og betydning i det menneskabte miljø og dynamikkerne mellem den opretholdte facade og kaos.
Storbyer i Europa gennemgår P.t. en betydelig sanering, som resultat at dette kommer jeg ofte forbi nedrivnings og opbygnings faser. Bygninger forsvinder næsten ubemærket, fortiden fjernes, og nye strukturer etableres. Samtidig er skønhedsindustrien optaget af at lancere det næste fantastiske produkt,- og via aps kan man redigere sig til det perfekte ydre.
Med afsæt i kulturelle normer og i takt med den stigende urbanisering trækker værkerne paralleller til et samfund som igennem århundreder har ændret udseende, samt til menneskets behov for at forny sig, til at kultivere og retouchere. Det forbinder menneskers personlige transformation og samfundets transformation til de nedrivnings-, opbygnings- smuksering-, og gentrificerings- processer som præger vores samtid.

If you look at Kristine Hymøller‘s work from the perspective of an architect, you can‘t help but notice the satirical quotation marks everywhere. With her very versatile works, she subversively challenges concepts such as the „faça- de“, „architecture“, the „cityscape“ and „urbanity“.
One can contextualise Kristine Hymøller‘s work on two levels of scale in archi- tectural discourse, the object and the urban landscape:
At the object level, fragments and materials from the building process keep appearing – bodies, skin, materials, authenticity and randomness are negotia- ted. The subsequent placement of these objects in space generates abstract urban landscapes that critically address issues such as the transformation and perception of our cities.

In Kristine Hymøller‘s recent work she orders plenty of large make-up-pallets, applies them in a performative act on her body, stages herself in front of newly built facades and creates rasterized abstraction of these facades by reusing these make-up-pallets as a mold for little concrete towers and facades.
It‘s a performative act that you can call „Camp“, a term that Susan Sontag describes in her essay from 1964 with the same name: a love of the unnatural – of artifice and exaggeration.
Kristine Hymøller‘s performance shows a frivolous „campiness“ that the mo- cked facades of the newly built housing blocks don‘t have. By exaggerating the genericness and blantness of these facades, she is challenging the current
narratives of these new city quarters.
She calls out these buildings that are mainly characterized by their commodi- fication for a capitalized housing market. Its inherent dynamics include on the one hand a wish for a low-risk investment, which lead to monofunctional hou- sing blocks, that are in high demand. On the other hand, developers ask for a distinct branding of the product through its façade – you may call it make-up. In short: a fancy packaging for a standardised content.
These dynamics of profit-oriented housing production can be observed above all in the urban expansion areas of growing cities and lead to a problematic desertification of these neighbourhoods – a series of pure residential buildings „in drag“ do not make a „city“. This requires spaces of possibility in which he- terogeneous uses and people can „nestle“ in order to let an exciting mélange grow.
This is precisely what Kristine Hymøller criticises when she walks through new housing developments in Odense and Copenhagen and denounces the disap- pearance of, for example, laundromats. She points out the importance of such collective spaces and the social problems that result from the lack of low-key meeting, educational and recreational spaces.
This critique, manifested in the form of „make-up“ towers, is complemented in Kristine Hymøller‘s work by other construction site artefacts: formwork tubes, drill cores, rebar and construction rubble are processed, coloured, sometimes gold-plated and arranged in such a way that abstract urban model landsca- pes emerge. These inevitably reveal similarities with the collages of Super- studio, which already in the 1970s, together with progressive fellows such as Archizoom, challenged in their concepts the functionalist and capitalised city planning and the consumer society that went with it.

„In the beginning we designed objects for production, designs to be turned into wood and steel, glass and brick or plastic – then we produced neutral and usable designs, then finally negative utopias, forewarning images of the horrors which architecture was laying in store for us with its scientific methods for the perpetuation of existing models.“ Superstudio, 1973, exhibition text “Fragments From A Personal Museum”, Neue Galerie Graz.
In their images, Superstudio visualise people who have overcome the cons- traints of a functionalist consumer society and walk through infinite landsca- pes where only single remaining artefacts remind us of the latter.
In Kristine Hymøller‘s exhibition „A tribute to the time between“, the pictorial similarities to these narratives are particularly strong: a landscape of construc- tion rubble, reinforcing iron and glass, made up with make-up in a ritual.

Symbolically, Hymöller in this way tells the story of a city and its society that transforms and „beautifies“ itself. As in the case of Superstudio, the answer remains open as to whether it is a utopia or a dystopia.
In Kristine Hymøller‘s work, one can thus discover themes such as authentici- ty, drag, shell, body, genericness, commodification, transformation and spec- tacle on both levels – object and space.
These terms inevitably bring us back to Guy Debord and the Situationists that he founded in 1956. In his major work, The Society of the Spectacle, Debord attacks the dynamics of modern consumer society: a society that functio- nalises and standardises everything and limits the role of the individual to passively consuming the spectacle provided as a substitute. The Paris-based Situationists read the city as a series of situations: Atmospheres created by vertical and horizontal surfaces, materials, people, smells and light. A dense urban experience in which people can drift freely and participate actively and creatively in the production of the city.
It is precisely this approach to reading the city – the Situationists called it psychogeography – that Kristine Hymøller‘s work reminds us of. It shows an urban society in the process of transformation and suggests the artist‘s own urgent desire: for a sensitively tangible and multi-layered city space of possi- bilities – which is also possible using generic materials like concrete, steel and glass.

Max Utech is an architect and researcher currently based and in Vienna and Paris with projects between urbanism, architecture and art. He is a PhD-can- didate at TU Wien, where he teaches at the departments of Housing and Urban Design.
In the framework of his current project „OFF city“, he is conducting research in Paris, Berlin and Vienna to explore the potential of wild, vague, irrational and uncoded urban spaces as a counterweight to the hegemonic, heteronorma- tive, capitalist and digitalized structures of the proclaimed city of the future – the „Smart city“.
